Services and Responsibilities

City Streets & Walkways: The department removes snow, treats ice, patches holes and utility trenches, sweeps, removes leaves and litter and keeps the edges up on all 53.4 miles of City roads.

Traffic Control Devices: The department maintains all signage, traffic lights, pavement markings and administers the street light contract with PSNH.

Storm Drain & Sewer Collection System Maintenance: The Public Works group keeps the lines running for all of the City’s storm drains and sanitary sewers.

Grounds Keeping: The Public Works Department mows the grass and maintains our open spaces. The Department removes dead trees and a great deal of brush.

Solid Waste: The Public Works Department serves as liaison between the residents and the contractor that removes household trash and recyclables. We maintain a Bulky Waste System that is partly user-paid, partly provided at no charge by the City. We administer the City’s Pay-Per-Bag trash disposal system including warehousing, ordering and distributing the bags. All rubbish inquiries should be directed to the Public Works Department at 692-4266. Office hours are 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.

Forest Glade Cemetery: We conduct the sale of the lots, perform burials, and maintain the grounds. For information on purchasing lots contact Jennifer Gosselin at the Public Works Office at 603-692-4266.

Services Available at Public Works Complex

If you should have any questions about the following services available, regarding drop off or by special appointment with Public Works, please contact the Public Works Department during their normal office hours of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

During Operation Hours (7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.), the following items can be dropped off:

Used Oil: There is a 300 gallon tank marked “Used Oil” to dispose of resident’s used motor oil. You must pour the oil into the funnel on top of the tank and take the container with you.

Used Car Batteries: Used car batteries will be accepted at the complex during the above-listed hours Monday thru Friday.

Electronic Waste: Televisions, computers, printers, fax machines, copiers – first you must purchase a bulky waste sticker (s) at City Hall.

Metal/White Goods: You can drop off old appliances such as stoves, microwave ovens, refrigerators, freezers, air conditions – first you must purchase a bulky waste sticker (s) and refrigerator removal sticker (if applicable) from City Hall.

Available to the public:

  • Corrugated Recycling Bins: At the complex entrance, there are four WMI dumpsters clearly marked for cardboard only. These containers are for larger pieces of cardboard that are not convenient to place curbside. Boxes must be flattened.
  • Sand and Salt: On the right side of the Complex driveway is a small building marked “Sand and Salt for Residents Only”. Residents of Somersworth may fill up five gallon buckets with mix beginning November 1. During the winter season, this building contains a mixture of two parts sand to one part road salt. You must bring your own container and there is a 30′ walk to your vehicle.

Curbside Brush Pickup Rules

Brush will be picked up the third week in April, May, October, & November. You must call 692-4266 by the Friday before to be added to the pickup list. Please have your brush curbside no later than 7:00am on Monday, April 14th, Monday, May 15th, Monday, October 16th, and Monday, November 20th for pickup. Brush can be up to five (5) inches in diameter and ten (10) feet long. PLEASE NOTE: Brush pickup is limited to 20 minutes per stop. Any remaining brush and cleanup of debris is the responsibility of the property owner.

Residents may also bring their brush to Malley Farm*.

Leaves and Grass Clippings

Bagged leaves will be picked up the fourth week in April, May, October and November. You do not have to call ahead for bagged leaves pickup. Please have leaves curbside no later than 7:00 am on your trash pickup day the week of April 21st, May 22nd, October 23rd and November 27th.

*Please note that pickup for bagged leaves has been delayed for a section of the City and Public Works will be out the week of November 30 to finish the pickup.*

Residents may also take bagged leaves and grass clippings to the City’s compost facility at the Malley Farm*. Residents must empty bags and containers and remove them from the site before leaving.

*Malley Farm is located off Main Street in the Malley Farm Industrial Park on Centre Road. After crossing the railroad tracks, turn right onto the dirt road. Continue past the house to a driveway on the right which leads to a gate. Deposit leaves and grass clippings in this area.   If you have any questions please contact Public Works at 692-4266.

Bagged Leaves and Grass Requirements

Only biodegradable bags can be used. If leaves and grass are not in biodegradable bags, they will not be picked up. You may use biodegradable plastic bags or brown paper leaf bags.

Only leaves, grass, pine needles and garden debris are allowed in the compost pile at Malley Farm. Only Brush is allowed in the Brush area.
