Weed Abatement Program

The City of Somersworth Department of Public Works will be applying a weed abatement herbicide to control unwanted weeds and vegetation along sidewalks and curbing right of way on designated streets. This is an annual program and involves the use of an outside licensed contractor to apply the herbicide.  The Department has contracted with Municipal Pest Management to apply the herbicide, an experienced contractor specializing in addressing weed control, removing invasive plants and unwanted vegetation.  According to Michael Bobinsky, Director of Public Works and Utilities, the process will involve the use of a weed control herbicide known as Rodeo along designated primary streets and future applications with an alternative product applied on secondary streets.  Applicators will follow State permit regulations and use safety and best practices during their work.  Future alternative product applications will serve as a demonstration to assess the effectiveness of biodegradable products as compared to the Rodeo product on weed abatement.  The Department will share the results with the contractor, surrounding communities trying similar products, and the State of New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. (DES).

Work teams from Municipal Pest Management will begin applying the herbicide on the streets as highlighted on the street map on Monday, July 10. Work activity is anticipated to occur generally from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Questions or concerns may be directed to the Public Works Department at 603-692-4266 between the hours of 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday thru Friday.
