What is Carbon Monoxide and what can I do to protect my home?

Carbon Monoxide is an invisible killer; you cannot see, smell or taste it, but in high levels, it can kill you in minutes. Carbon Monoxide is a byproduct of improperly burned fuels such as wood, oil, natural gas, gasoline and kerosene. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness.

If you have any of the above symptoms, get to fresh air and call 911. You should have a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home unless you only have electric heat and no attached garage. The main source of carbon monoxide is unburned vapors from fossil appliances (oil, LP gas, natural gas, kerosene, gasoline, etc.) Never operate unvented space heaters or generators inside any building!
